Ladakh: An Overview

Ladakh is a place with a unique landscape, traditions and cultures. Apart from the renowned tourist attractions, it is also known for its unique festivals and fairs. Some of the prominent festivals of this union territory are Losar Festival, Hemis Tsechu, Sindhu Darshan Festival, Ladakh Harvest Festival, Saka Dawa Festival and Ladakh Festival. These festivals will give you a glimpse of this land's rich heritage and culture.

  • The Losar Festival marks the beginning of the year in Tibetan Buddhism. It is also one of the biggest festivals in Ladakh and spans 15 days. It involves feeding ancestors, gods and animals, and people also consume Tibetan Beer or Changkol. Ibex Deer dances and staged fights between good and evil are the highlights of this festival.

  • Hemi Tsechu is a festival that marks the birth of one of the founders of Tibetan Buddhism, Guru Padmasambhava. The festival is celebrated in the Hemis Monastery. Masked dances and colourful silk attires worn by the monks are the highlights of this festival.

  • Saka Dawa is a festival that symbolises the birth of Sakyamuni, the other name for Lord Gautam Buddha when he attained enlightenment. People chant the "Om Mani Padme Hum" mantra during this festival. People also erect a new flag pole at Tarpoche and hang new flags on it.

  • Ladakh Festival will give you a glimpse of the rich culture and heritage of the land. The tourism department organises it to promote tourism and help the locals. You can witness various cultural programs, traditional music, and folk dances, enjoy local delicacies and watch sports such as archery and polo matches. It is a must-visit festival if you are in Ladakh.
