Meghalaya is a state that receives the highest rainfall in India. Apart from its breathtaking landscapes, the state is also known for its unique culture, heritage and festivals. The prominent festivals in this state include Nongkrem Dance Festival, Behdienkhlam Festival and Autumn Festival. These celebrations also attract tourists from around the world.
The Nongkrem Dance Festival begins with a dance in front of a wooden pillar called "U Rishot Blei". The festival involves young men and women performing the Nongkrem dance in traditional attire. The festival takes place in Smit, just 15 km from Shillong.
Behdienkhlam Festival is a harvest festival spanning three days. Behdienkhlam translates to "driving away evil by wooden sticks". Hence, it involves young men and women driving away evil spirits, plagues and pests by hitting the roofs of the houses with bamboo sticks.
Autumn Festival is a cultural event held in Shillong by the local administration and local people. It involves several cultural events, including wine and food festivals, local bands' performances and designers showcasing their fabrics.
