Indian citizens need a visa to visit historic and quaint Hungary. There are a few different types of visas available, depending on the purpose of your visit to beautiful Hungary. Take a look at the visa and visa requirements section to see which visa you want to travel on.
Based on the purpose of your visit (tourism, business, family visit, etc.) to Hungary, choose the appropriate visa category.
Short-term Schengen Visa
The short-term Hungary Schengen visa allows Indian travellers to visit Hungary and other Schengen countries for tourism, airport transit, conferences, business, family visits, or medical purposes. This type of visa is valid for a stay of up to 90 days within a 180-day period.
Long-term Visa
If an Indian citizen intends to stay in Hungary for more than 90 days, then they need to apply for a long-term Schengen visa at the Hungary consulate. This category of visa is suitable for Indian citizens planning to work, study, or settle in Hungary. Once in Hungary, long-stay visa holders need to apply for a residence permit.
To apply for a Hungary visa you need to fill the Schengen visa application form. The Hungary visa application process is easy and straightforward. Put personal details as listed in your passport. Double-check the spelling and dates listed in your passport. You don’t want visa rejection just because you misspelt your name.
You can find this form on the official website of the Hungarian embassy or consulate in India or the affiliated travel agent website. VFS is the company that deals with Hungary Schengen visas in India. The whole visa application procedure will be done via VFS Global. Bring a copy of the filled application form along with the required visa documents to the Hungary Visa Application Centre on the day of your appointment.
Based on where you live, choose a Hungary Visa Application Center and book an appointment to submit your visa application to the embassy. Do book an appointment in advance, as the application centres are busy, especially during peak travel season. Don’t be shocked if the next available appointment is after a month; that’s how busy they can get. You will receive a confirmation email listing the details of your visa appointment. If you are applying for a Hungary visa as a family or a group, make sure to make individual appointments for each member.
Each visa category has slightly different requirements. Here's a general overview of the documents you might need.
Valid Passport
Your passport should be valid for a minimum of three months beyond your intended departure from the Schengen Area. It should also have two adjacent blank pages for the visa. The airlines in India will not let you board the flight if your passport expires in 3 months, even if you have a valid Hungary visa. So check your passport before you start planning your trip.
Visa Application Form
Complete and sign the visa application form. Make sure to fill in your personal details to match your passport.
Passport Size Photos
Provide 2 recent passport-sized photographs along with your visa application. Check the specific requirements for the photo outlined by the consulate. They literally measure your photos with a ruler to check if they match the listed specifications.
Travel Itinerary
Present a detailed travel plan, including flight reservations, accommodation bookings, and a rough itinerary of your time in Hungary.
Proof of Accommodation
Submit confirmed hotel reservations or an invitation letter from a host if you're staying with friends or family.
Travel Insurance
Travel insurance is mandatory for all Hungary visas for Indians. It should have a minimum coverage of at least 30,000 Euros for medical emergencies and repatriation for the entire duration of your stay.
Proof of Financials to support the trip
You need to submit Bank statements, salary slips, sponsorship letters, or other evidence to show you can financially support yourself during your stay in Hungary.
No Objection Certificate (NOC)
If employed, you need to submit a letter from your employer stating your leave approval and the purpose of your travel.
Proof of Relationship Status with the person financing the travel
If applicable, provide marriage certificates, birth certificates of children, etc.
Health Certificate
Some visa categories (long-term visas) might require a health certificate, especially if you plan to stay for an extended period.
Purpose-specific Documents
Depending on your purpose of visit (e.g., invitation letter, business-related documents, etc.), you might need to submit additional documents for your visa.
You need to visit the visa application centre in person to submit your visa application, pay visa fees, and provide biometric data, including fingerprints and photographs. The Hungary Visa Fees For Indians is 80 Euros (approximately Rs. 7,200). Additionally, you will have to pay service charges, fees, or any additional service you avail at the application centre.
Once your application is submitted to the embassy you will receive a tracking ID on your email. You can check your visa application status online using the tracking ID. If you don’t check your email frequently then opt for SMS updates for additional charges. In some cases, you might need to attend a visa interview and explain your travel plan to an officer from the consulate.
Now wait patiently for a minimum of 15 working days for your application to get processed. It's a long waiting period, so apply well in advance for your visa.
Once the consulate has figured out what to do with your visa application, you've got a couple of choices for getting your passport back. You can swing by the Hungary Visa Application Centre and grab it in person, or if you're feeling a bit lazy (no judgement here!) or live far away, you can have it delivered to you by a courier service—just be ready to pay a little extra for that convenience. Do not lose the visa application receipt; you will need it to collect your passport.
Apply early and keep extra time for unavoidable delays
Double-check your visa documents before submitting your application
State the purpose of your visit honestly and clearly
Have enough funds in your bank account
If you are not confident, then engage a travel agent to help you with the visa process
