Passport fees in India: Normal vs Tatkaal passport fees

Passport fee in India is the fees charged by the passport-issuing authority to issue a new passport or renew an existing passport. This amount varies and is determined depending on the category of passport, Required Scheme (Tatkaal or Normal), age, whether it is a new passport or renewal and the total pages required in the new passport booklet. Passport charges in India can range between Rs. 1000 to Rs. 5500. For a general 36 page booklet fresh or new passport fees charged by the authority is Rs. 1500. If you opt for a 60 page booklet then the passport charges are Rs. 2000. The same passport under the Tatkaal scheme will cost Rs. 3500 (36 page booklet) and Rs. 4000 (60 page booklet).

As a general passport applicant, you can apply for a passport either under the normal or Tatkal scheme. The main differences between the two passport schemes are the time in which your application is processed and the new passport fees charged.

A normal passport in India is issued within the time frame of 30 days post-application submission. This is applicable provided all your documents, data and police verification are approved. As the name suggests a Tatkaal passport in India is a fast-track application process where the applicant receives his passport in under a week. If you need your passport on an urgent basis then you can apply for the Tatkaal passport service. Tatkaal passport charges are higher compared to a normal passport price. The passport authority in India charges additional passport fees of Rs. 2000 for all Tatkaal passports.

How to pay passport fees?

The Ministry of External Affairs provides passport services across the country via the Central Passport Organisation (CPO) and its network of Passport Seva Kendras (PSK), Passport Offices, and Post Office Passport Seva Kendras (POPSK).

The process of applying for a passport has been simplified over the years. There is no need to physically go to a passport office to reserve a spot. While booking an appointment, passport application forms are also filled out online. It is mandatory to pay passport fees in India online. You can pay the required fees online via the following channels:

  1. Credit card and debit card - All Visa and Master cards are accepted to pay passport fees online. Keep in mind that for all card transactions banks charge an additional 1.5% plus service charge.

  2. SBI Bank Challan - While filling out the passport application form you can opt for SBI Challan for payment. Once the Challan is generated you can physically visit your nearest SBI Branch to make the payment. The payment can be done after 3 hours from challan generation to up to a maximum of 85 days. The payment via Challan takes around 2 working days to process and after that, you can fix your appointment online.

  3. Internet Banking - Passport fees in India can be paid via internet banking through the State Bank of India(SBI) and other approved banks.

  4. SBI Wallet Payment - If you are a passport applicant applying under the Tatkaal scheme then while booking an appointment you only have to pay normal category fees. The additional fees for expediting your passport application will be charged directly at the passport office once your application is accepted. This additional Tatkaal fee is payable in cash at the passport office. In most cases, the Tatkaal passport fee is Rs. 2000. Make sure to carry the required amount in cash when you visit the passport office.

You can also visit a Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) without a prior appointment. All Walk-in applicants can pay passport application fees in cash. A prior online appointment is highly recommended if you want a hassle-free passport application experience.
